Sunfood Superfoods has an amazing mission: they “are on a quest to help you discover the healing, energy and longevity power within you. We do this through education and the most nutrient dense, raw, organic, Non-GMO superfoods on the planet.”
Family-operated out of San Diego, California, Sunfood Superfoods provides a wide range of products including powders, tea, snacks, nuts, oils, supplements, and more! I was introduced to this company when looking for a raw vanilla powder and found one on the shelves of a local co-op, The Dill Pickle.
At over $40 a bag, I really had to ask myself… “Do I really need this?” and my frugal-but-foodie-beastie self had to add in… “This better be worth it”.
Reading the bag:
Ingredients: Ground vanilla beans.
Benefits mentioned on bag: Fiber, calcium, potassium, trace minerals
Labels: Non-gmo, 100% raw, no preservatives, no added sugar, no additives, vegan, grown without pesticides or synthetic fertilizers
My Healthy Beast Review Begins: Opening the bag of 100% Raw Vanilla, I was immediately greeted with the most delectable aroma – Vanilla, of course, but more than that, this is so pure it almost smells like chocolate!
I first used Sunfood’s vanilla powder in my Shamrock Shake recipe. Doing a little research, people mentioned to use 1/3 the amount of powder as you would when using a vanilla extract. But, when tasting my shake, I found that equal parts worked wonders. I love vanilla flavor, and this is as pure as it gets. I tend to over-vanilla my foods like I over-salt sometimes. I just love flavor! So that is where it gets subjective – if you don’t want to be hit in the face by vanilla, by all means, tone it down.
Within the smoothie, the fact that I could see the dark brown speckles of vanilla made the experience even better. It would be like comparing two vanilla ice creams: one has those dark brown speckles and one does not. Just by looking at it, I know that the one with real vanilla beans is going to have that authentic, full-bodied flavor.
Worth the money? ABSOLUTELY.
The 4 oz. bag might seem small, but a little powder goes a long way. I haven’t had to buy a bag in a long time and I have been using it in everything that calls for vanilla. I put it in my coffee grounds, baked goods, and smoothies.
Why not just buy extract? Don’t get me wrong, vanilla extract is delicious too. But when diving into the detailed flavors of the two, the fact that extract is just vanilla soaked in alcohol and sometimes water, the flavor is just not as pure.
You want the real deal? This is it!

*NOTE: I have not been swayed by Sunfood Superfoods in anyway. They did not pay me, they did not even send me free stuff (bummer, right?). That means that this review is totally un-biased!
